Escaping NYC: Steven Holl’s Upstate NY House

To celebrate the US Independence Day on the 4th July, Steven invited the studio to join him at his upstate New York residence for some traditional BBQ, swimming and a chance to escape the sweltering NYC. It was an architectural experience as well – I finally got to see the structures that have been added to the original property over several years: an ongoing experiment as much as a place to spend some quiet weekends with a watercolour pad (more in this WSJ interview). It was fun to spot some of the ideas/ materials that were later used in bigger projects by the firm – there’s probably no better way to see if something works than by testing it on your own self first. Despite the many architectural experiences and unusual materials co-existing in a limited space, everything fits in the natural landscape rather comfortably, and creates a perfect place to relax. Which we did, with plenty of swimming (and an upturned boat!) in the nearby water lily covered lake, multiple conversations, and a great deal of specialty dishes from all over the world that my colleagues prepared. It was a good day.

Below are some photos, yet for individual projects I recommend looking at the following links: Little Tesseract at stevenholl.com and on Behance by Bilyana Dimitrova; T-Space on ArchDaily and the Round Lake Hut at stevenholl.com

I have already written that the studio is relatively small; turns out most of us can fit on one balcony – Steven jokingly explained that this is the real reason the office cannot grow any bigger: we simply would not be able to take spontaneous photos like this one.
